SPRING - Lake Ridge Nursery celebrates Valentines Day and is a reminder that Spring is just around the corner and Mother’s Day follows in mid-May. Visit our retail center for gifts and floral arrangements to please that special sweet heart.

Spring lawn care begins in March and is a great time to lime, fertilize, seed and control weeds and insects in the lawn.

• FREE DEMOS – Planting baskets, planters, and other decorating ideas.
• Spring seeding and crabgrass prevention should be done in mid March - mid April.
• Liming and fertilizing can be done in March, April or May.

Our nursery sells Proven Winners Plant Foods from Sunshine. These products have everything home gardeners need - and more - to grow the best looking plants in the neighborhood. We chose these formulations because they provide the additional Nitrogen PW varieties need to maximize their rates of growth and flower production

  • Broadleaf weed prevention should be done in March (if not seeding). Broadleaf weeds already growing in the lawn can be killed in March, April or May (depending on seeding schedule).
  • Insects can be controlled between mid April - June.
  • Mow and/or rake the lawn if needed & scratch-up bare spots.
  • Sow grass seed of your choice - Merrifield Tuff Play, Merrifield Sunny or Merrifield Shady Grass Seed Blends.
  • Apply 4-18-14 Lawn Food.
  • Apply Scotts Crabgrass Preventer (except in heavy shade) in mid March – mid April.
  • Cover the seeded bare spots with Peat Moss, Topsoil, Organic Compost or Straw.
  • Water the lawn frequently until seed germinates and fills in.
  • Apply second application of Scotts Crabgrass Preventer 30-40 days after first application.
  • If needed, control broadleaf weeds in the lawn with Weed Beater or Expel Weed Killer (must be done 3 weeks before seeding or after new seed has germinated and been mowed twice).
  • If needed, apply Season Long Grub Control.

SUMMER - Lake Ridge Nursery slows a bit in summer giving gardeners a chance to enjoy their creations, tend their gardens, and think about the next planting season - Fall. However, don't forget our FIREWORKS TENT where your purchases help local charities in the area.

Summer is an ideal time to water the lawn, especially during periods of drought. It is also an ideal time to control insects and diseases in the lawn. Broadleaf weed prevention should be done in August (if seeding in the fall). Do not spray lawns with weed killers when temperatures are above 86 degrees F. Insects can be controlled in June and grubs can be controlled in August.

  • Apply 1” – 2” of water to lawns each week by thoroughly soaking the turf areas.
  • If needed, apply Scott Lawn & Garden Multi-Insect Killer in June to control insects such as chinch bugs, sod webworms, billbugs, ants and fleas.
  • Apply Dylox® in August to control grubs.
  • Apply Ortho Lawn Fungicide to help prevent & cure lawn diseases such as brown patch & dollar spot (see our staff for guidance).
  • Apply an organic lawn food to help maintain green color.
  • If you plan to seed in the fall, you can apply Portrait in early August to prevent winter annual weeds (seeding can be done 45 days after applying Portrait, which would put seeding at mid September).
  • Feed zoysia lawns with Merrifield Premium 26-4-12 Lawn Food during June, July and /or August.
  • If needed, sod or plug zoysia lawns during June or July.

FALL - Lake Ridge Nursery has pumpkins, cornstalks, a rope swing, pumpkins, gourd painting for Halloween and many Fall decorating ideas. We sponsor school field trips during this back to school period.

It is now time to visit us for your lime, seed, weed control, and fertilizer to control weeds in the lawn as explained below:

  • Fall seeding should be done in September or October (the earlier the better).
  • Broadleaf weed prevention (to control winter annuals) should be done in September if you are not seeding.
  • Late fall is time to rake leaves off of grassy areas to prevent damage to the turf.
  • Mow and/or rake the lawn if needed & scratch-up bare spots.
  • Core aerate and/or de-thatch the lawn if needed.
  • Sow grass seed of your choice - blends do great.
  • Apply fertilizer and lawn food at the same time as seeding.
  • Cover the seeded bare spots with Peat Moss, Topsoil, Organic Compost or Straw.
  • Water the lawn as needed until seed germinates and fills in.
  • If you are planning a total renovation of the lawn in the fall, which involves killing off all of the existing grass & weeds first and then starting over with seed or sod, do the following:
  • Spray Roundup in early August (gauge effectiveness after two weeks).
  • If needed, spray Roundup again in mid August to ensure total kill of existing grass and weeds.
  • Once all vegetation is brown, roto-till to a depth of 6” or more and add organic matter and add Fertilizer to the soil. Rake it smooth and level. Then seed or sod in late August or Early September.
