Once your new landscaped area is completed we highly recommend the following maintenance program. Every situation is different and may require adjustments. Lake Ridge Nursery Landscaping checks all the items below and makes adjustments to give the best condition possible for a beautiful and long lasting landscape. Our guarantee is your satisfaction and nothing else will be accepted. You must maintain your landscaping for it to continue to grow and stay beautiful

A good understanding of the following is a good beginning.

In order to maintain your new landscaping (turf grass, shrubs, landscape plants, trees) you must first understand what they need and when they need it.

FIVE important factors must be considered when planning your landscape and keep in mind when you are maintaining your landscaping - 1. Soil, 2. Water, 3. Fertilization, 4. Insect Contol, and 5. Weeds.

1. Soil: Unfortunately, most soils in Northern Virginia contain clay which is poor quality and have very few nutrients. Depending upon the area, the pH normally ranges from (7.0 to 9.0) this range of pH causes problems growing healthy plants, trees, shrubs and grass. Ninety five percent of our plants, trees, shrubs and grasses like a slightly acid soil. A soil with a pH range of (6.0 to 7.0) satisfies most requirements. pH: pH is probably the most important thing to maintaining a beautiful lawn. A pH reading will tell if your soil is too acidic or alkaline. The pH scale ranges from 0-14 with 7 being neutral. Anything below 7 is acidic and above 7 is alkaline. Most grasses do best between 6-7 pH. High alkaline soil can lock up the nutrients and your grass will turn a yellow color and slowly dies of starvation. If the soil is too acidic, the roots will burn and the grass will start to die back.

Most lawns are alkaline, and need to be lowered and maintained at 7 or below. To maintain or lower pH in your lawn, you can use Humates, Iron, Lime, Sulfur. To raise the pH (this is rare) you should use dolomite products.
We will insure your soils have the pH checked and then recommend the best products to insure health soils for your lawn and landscaping project.

2. Water: Watering your new grass, plants, trees, and shrubs is very important. The object of Watering is to maintain the area around the root ball as evenly moist as possible. Take care, water slowly and let the water penetrate the soil and try to water in the cool of the day. And remember too much water is just as bad as not enough water so follow the guidelines below.

  • Water slowly with the hose turned on 1/4 strength.
  • Time how long it takes to fill a one gallon container and use that time as a guide.
  • Shrubs up to 3 feet: two gallons of water per shrub every other day for 15 days and two gallons every third day for 15 days.
  • Trees up to seven feet: four gallons of water every other day for 15 days and four gallons every third day for 15 days.
  • Trees from eight feet to twelve feet: six gallons of water every other day for 15 days and six gallons twice a week for 30 days.
  • Trees from twelve to twenty four feet – twelve gallons of water every third day for 30 days and twelve gallons of water twice a week for 60 days.

3. Fertilization: Fertilizing is very important in maintaining a beautiful lawn. We recommend fertilizing a minimum of 4 times a year. You need to use different kinds of fertilizer for different seasons. During some of the seasons, extra fertilizer may be needed due to excessive rainfall or heavily drained areas. Most of the soil in Northern Virginia is lacking in nutrients required to grow healthy grass, trees, and shrubs. For this reason, it is important that we fertilize according to their needs. Our garden center has many varieties of fertilizer to satisfy all your new plants requirements and the scheduled times of the year to apply.

  • New plantings should not be fertilized for 30 days after installation.
  • Certain plants such as roses need to be fertilized more often.
  • We have special care sheets for roses, lawn grasses, plants, trees, and acid loving plants. You can pick up those sheets at the Garden Center.

4. Insect Control: Chinch bugs, Grubs, and Webworms, are the most common pests that can destroy your lawn. Rotating Dylox and Kill-a-grub is the best way of preventing insects. Prevention works the majority of the time, but there are times infestation may still occur. In that case, Dylox or Kill-a-grub can be used for a direct kill.

5. Weeds In Your Lawn And Floral Beds: Weeds are the toughest problem in the lawn. The best way to control weeds, is to prevent them from occurring by using Hi-Yield Crabgrass Control, pre-emergence containing Baylan / Treflan. If you already have weeds, there are selective herbicides you can use. Remember that there is not a one-time solution. It can take 3 or 4 applications to be effective.
Very Important: There are different selective herbicides for different (time of year, types of grasses, and types of weeds) Bring samples of weeds and grass to your nursery professional and ask for the proper herbicide that will work the best for you. Weed-block should be applied to all new flower beds or shrub areas.

Maintenance is not hard, but does require you to follow a maintenance program. Your eyes are the most important part of a good maintenance program. If something in your landscaping does not look good to you, there is a good chance that something is wrong. If you do not recognize the problem, give us a call or come in with a sample of what you think is wrong. Early detection of a problem is the key to a quick cure and a healthy landscape.

A quality landscape plan offers the right plant for the right place, every time and accomplishes much more than just "looking pretty." The proper selection and arrangement of plant material and features reduce maintenance and watering requirements in addition to offering seasonal color and interest, fragrance and visual appeal with minimal effort.

Prior to setting up a consultation, give your landscape some consideration:

  • Identify assets and liabilities.
  • How much time and effort are you willing to devote to care and maintenance?
  • Note photos in books or magazines that capture a look you find appealing.
  • Browse through our garden center and get a feeling for the types of plants you like.
  • Consider your favorite colors, seasons and styles as well as those of your family.
  • Call us now at 703 590-1078 to discuss your landscaping dream.
